I love going to Broadway Market in Hackney. Every Saturday there’s an eclectic mix of food and clothes stalls, independent shops, coffee bars, pubs and restaurants jostling for attention. The stalls are bursting with enticing flavours and smells from roasted coffee, and organic burgers, to cakes, cheeses and fresh artisan breads. In amongst the food stalls are clothes racks of vintage finds, local designer jewellery and handmade knits for kids.
There’s a mass array of street food on offer to munch as you wander around, the choices seem endless including hot hog roast, Vietnamese banh mi baguettes, Persian kookoo (like falafel) and Italian arancini risotto balls.
A visit to Broadway Market for us concludes with a pint at the always-packed Cat and Mutton pub on the corner – full of hipster Dalston/Hackney types – think neon leather satchels, red trousers, brogues sans socks and red lippy. We try and not look too untidy in the corner of the boozer – not cool enough for this school!
Broadway Market can easily be combined with a visit to the nearby Netil Market and London Fields Farmer’s Market.
