Sadly the market has changed a lot over the last few years, with many of the older stalls leaving. All the fruit and veg these days seems to be £1 bowls of varying quality. It’s still a fantastic place to wander on a Saturday, people watching and bargain hunting. Where else could you buy anything – fresh yams, packs of curtains, kids toys and granny knickers?
- ‘Pound-a-bowl stall’ outside Sainsbury’s – there’s lots of fruit and veg pound-a-bowl stalls on the market and the quality can vary. We spend about £10 per week here on fresh, colourful Mediterranean veg – usually we buy masses of tomatoes, red peppers, coriander, red onions, broccoli, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, mushrooms and aubergines.
- ‘John’s chocolate stall’ near Fish Brothers jewellers – bargain chocolate, nuts and dried fruit, crisps, and other groceries, he’s often got some good olive oil tucked away.
- Now where else?
